A Survivor's Closet

How my memories as a little girl became the diary of one of the most horrific, severe child abuse stories in Missouri history.
By Debra Pauli
"...a heart throbbing, gripping child abuse story that you just can’t stop reading..." Debra Pauli’s first non-fiction is a miraculous true story that exposes her childhood life as she was faced with daily torment and several times nearly killed by her mother. Living with her mother’s hatred, Debra was brutally tortured, beat and confined to a small dark closet. Debra’s inner determination and perseverance kept her filled with courage if she was to survive her mother’s persistence that she was a devil’s child. After years of attempted suffocation, a straitjacket, cigarette burns, electrical shocks from a cattle prod, forced to eat horse manure, fed adult sedatives to keep her immobile, the incidents continued to be life threatening for Debra, forcing her to flee into the deserts of Arizona in an attempt to escape and survive her mother and step-father.

This must read true story contains elements of suspense, shocking experiences and the journey of life struggles for happiness as the author shares her extraordinary autobiography that has never been revealed until now – 40-years later."

Why We Cry for a Soul Set Free

In Loving Memory of Bryce Lee
By Debra Pauli
"Why We Cry for a Soul Set Free" is the story of how Debra Pauli dealt with the death of her child, one of the most difficult experiences a parent could go through. She believed her son, Bryce Lee Haugen, was the bravest human being she had ever seen. Bryce had been diagnosed with epilepsy and mild mental retardation at a very young age. With his limitations, his life was a challenging one, but despite the treatment he sometimes received from those who couldn't accept or understand him, he always looked at life in a positive way and loved people unconditionally. At late night on July 21, 2005, Bryce died from "cerebral edema with herniation" at 6:30 pm. In her work, "Why We Cry for a Soul Set Free," Pauli chooses to share how it feels to lose a child: the many facets of emotion including shock, numbness, loneliness and despair. The book was written to provide support and compassion to those who have also lost a loved one.
